How to find a specific comment on YouTube

You remember a comment — roughly what it said, maybe who wrote it — and you cannot find it again. This is one of the few things YouTube makes genuinely impossible, and the reason is worth understanding before you spend an hour scrolling.

The short version

  1. Paste the video or channelIf you know which video it was, paste that. If you only know the channel, paste the channel and search across everything.
  2. Search a phrase you rememberType any few words from the comment. Matching runs locally against every comment and reply loaded, and updates as you type.
  3. Or filter by who wrote itIf you remember the person but not the words, filter by author name — or by channel ID, which does not change when they rename.
  4. Open it on YouTubeEvery result carries a direct link that opens that exact comment in place, which is what you need to reply or report.

Why you cannot find it by scrolling

YouTube loads comments in small batches as you scroll, and unloads the ones above you to keep the page fast. So the comment section is never fully in the page at once, which means your browser’s find function has almost nothing to search. It reports no matches and you conclude the comment is gone.

Sorting does not rescue this either. “Top comments” hides everything without likes, and “Newest first” buries anything older than a few days. If the comment you want is neither popular nor recent — which is most comments — no sort order brings it to the surface.

Search the whole set instead

ClearComments loads every public comment and reply into your browser first, then searches that set locally. A phrase from page ninety is found as quickly as one from page one, and the search covers replies, which is where a surprising share of comments actually live.

You do not need the exact wording. Search a distinctive fragment — an unusual word, a name, a number — and narrow from there.

When you remember the person, not the words

Filter by author name. If they have since renamed the account, filter by channel IDinstead: a display name can be changed at any time, the ID cannot. Paste the ID or the channel URL and you get everything that account wrote across everything loaded.

This is also the honest way to answer “has this person bothered us before?”, which is a channel-level question that searching one video at a time never resolves.

Narrowing when the search is still too broad

  • Date range — if you know roughly when it appeared.
  • Minimum word count — drops the one-word replies clogging the results.
  • Mentions a timestamp — if the comment pointed at a moment in the video.
  • Review signals — if what you remember is that it was hostile or spam.

Filters combine with the search rather than replacing it.

What cannot be found

A deleted comment is gone for everyone. A comment YouTube has held for review, or already classified as likely spam, is visible only to the channel owner through an authorised login — no public tool can reach it. And a comment left on a private or removed video goes with the video.
